--Other Resources for TennCare Disenrollees--

  • How to appeal the loss of your TennCare coverage:

You have the right to appeal the loss of your TennCare coverage. However, only the state's TennCare Bureau can decide which appeals will receive hearings. An appeal may allow you to keep your coverage a little while longer, and it could potentially reinstate your coverage altogether. Click HERE (PDF) to read about the appeals process.

  • Use the State of Tennessee's "Health Options Hotline":

This toll-free hotline, 1-888-486-9355, provides information on prescription assistance programs, and can connect TennCare disenrollees with a registered nurse who is available to answer health questions. The hotline is also able to help Tennessee residents find healthcare resources by county.

  • Search the State of Tennessee's online "Health Options" database:

The State's Health Options resource is also available online. This is a sizeable list of health, mental health, and substance abuse resources, and it is searchable by county. Click HERE to visit the Health Options site.

  • Visit the TennCare Bureau's website:

The TennCare Bureau's site, located at www.state.tn.us/tenncare, posts news about TennCare, and provides information on benefit reductions and disenrollment.

  • TennCare Advocacy:

Follow the links below to find out about specific programs. (This listing of resources is not meant to be comprehensive.)

  • Legal Aid's Rx Assistance Guide (PDF) was developed by the Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, but applies to residents in all parts of the state.
  • TennCare has posted a "short list" of prescription drugs that do not count towards an enrollee's monthly drug limit. Click HERE to see the list (PDF).
  • Pharmacy Resources Compiled by TennCare Advocacy (PDF) details a number of prescription drug cost-assistance programs.
  • Private health insurance:

Many disenrollees will be eligible for private health insurance. Click HERE to view the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance's explanation of who is eligible for private insurance. Also available is a list of private insurers who are required to accept certain disenrollees for health coverage (though premiums may be high).

  • Use TennHelp to search for low-cost or free health, dental, or
mental health services (including prescription assistance programs):

As you may have noticed on previous pages, TennHelp can help you find the health and/or mental health care you and your loved ones need. We have gone through our database and identified those health and mental healthcare providers (clinics, hospitals, and other organizations) that are able to provide reduced-rate or free care to low-income or uninsured Tennesseans. Programs that assist with prescription drug costs are also included.

    Here's how TennHelp works:

    1. From the main TennHelp page, click on STEP 1.

    2. From the list of categories in Step 2, click on HEALTH or MENTAL HEALTH AND COUNSELING.

    3. You will now be asked to choose either your county or zip code. Enter that and click

    4. Now you will see a list of health providers located near you. You will also see that some have the following picture beside them:

This picture means that this provider offers reduced-cost or free health services to low-income or uninsured Tennesseans. It is IMPORTANT that you contact the health or mental health care provider you wish to use before visiting their office. This way, you'll know ahead of time if you meet their criteria for financial assistance.
  • To begin your search, you will need to return to the TennHelp home page.

    • Please note that we will continue to expand this resource in the coming months. Please check back later if a low-cost provider is not currently listed for your immediate area.
    • Note to providers: If we have flagged your organization in error, or if you would like to be removed from our flagged list, please email us at tennhelp@tals.org.

Visitors should be advised that TennCare information changes almost daily.
Please send updates or corrections to tennhelp@tals.org.
